The Soloist is the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a Black musical prodigy, written by Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez. In 2009, it was adapted into a film directed by Joe Wright, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. The movie explores themes of homelessness and mental illness, particularly schizophrenia, through the relationship between Ayers and Lopez.

The discussion will be led by Dr. Anna Janicki

Dr. Anna Janicki, a psychoanalyst, will discuss the film in the context of racism during the Hough Uprising of 1966, sparked by a racially charged incident at the SeventyNiners Cafe in Cleveland. The discussion will also address trauma responses, including those related to Chronic PTSD with delayed onset.
